The Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation was privileged and proud to add its name in support of the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial preservation efforts. Mt. Rushmore's mountain visages projects the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The National memorial was carved by Gutzon Borglum and dedicated 75 years ago - 1941. All of the presidents deeply impacted on the story of American Jewry and the process of establishing freedom for all citizens in the unique experiment - America. Borglum was a controversial individual closely associated with the Ku Klux Klan and the myopia of his time. His magnificent gift to all Americans quickly and appropriately relegated his and the country's brief detour into Nativism to a distant past. The carving of the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation's name on Mt. Rushmore is the first time in Rushmore's history that a Jewish organization has been permanently represented.
